How to clean a dishwasher filter
Cleaning your dishwasher filter is a great way to extend the life of your appliance. It's also a great first step when troubleshooting issues with your dishwasher's performance.
Asurion Experts are trained in and have experience with all major appliance repairs and can help you to keep yours working at their best. Here's their guide on how to clean a dishwasher filter.
Where is my dishwasher filter? How can I find it?
With so many different makes and models out there, it can be confusing to try and figure out where your dishwasher’s filter is located. The best place to find this information is in your owner's manual (It will also let you know whether your dishwasher even has a filter; many don’t).
If you know your dishwasher’s make and model, you can find the instructions online. This information is usually located on a plate or sticker within the washer itself, usually on or near the door.
Removing the dishwasher filter
Once you’ve found your dishwasher filter, you can remove it with three simple steps:
- Take out the bottom rack of your dishwasher and set it aside.
- Gently turn the filter clockwise until it releases, then pull it out. In some cases, you may need a screwdriver to help remove a cover from the filter.
- Once you’ve removed the upper filter, you should be able to easily lift out the larger one below it.
No one wants to deal with a broken appliance
With Asurion Appliance+, you don’t have to. Our hassle-free plans cover all your eligible home appliances—no matter the brand or where you bought them.
How should I clean my dishwasher filter?
We recommend running your filters under warm or hot water and scrubbing them thoroughly with a clean soapy sponge. Food particles and residue may build up from grease that gets trapped inside the filter over time; pay special attention to removing these blockages.
Replacing the dishwasher filter
To replace the dishwasher filter, follow these four steps that will work on most dishwasher models:
- Set the larger mesh filter back into the area you removed it from.
- Set the second, smaller filter into the hole where you retrieved it from.
- Turn the filter counterclockwise and ensure it is secure.
- Give the sprayer arm a gentle spin to make sure the filter won’t interfere with the sprayer arm during the cycle. (This step is crucial, as the filter could damage your appliance if not replaced correctly.)
Easy, right? We recommend cleaning the filter out every three to six months to keep your dishwasher well maintained so it can continue to provide you with clean, germ-free dishes after every cycle.
